Top 5 MOST asked Questions!
Hi I'm Pippa and I am a specialist newborn baby photographer, my beautiful studio is based in Dorset, Hampshire. I have been working with newborn babies for nearly a decade! I have worked with hundreds of families over the years. I absolutely LOVE my job, newborns are my ultimate favourite clients to work with!
I often get asked lots of questions about my NEWBORN photoshoots, so here I will answer the most commonly asked questions.
When is the best time to have my newborn baby photographed?
This is a really common question and a very IMPORTANT one! Not everyone will realise but newborn babies are best photographed anytime from 5 days old - 14 days old. Why so early you wonder?
Well, at this stage newborn babies are at their most sleepiest. To achieve the cute, sleepy posed photographs the newborn babies need to be super sleepy! If the baby isn't in a deep sleep it is very difficult to achieve the poses. They are super flexible at this age and this allows us to gently guide and pose them for those super cute shots! Once they go past the two week mark you will notice that you baby is becoming more alert and will have longer periods of awake time throughout the day. This is wonderful because your baby is awake and taking in the new world around them. However for newborn photography if you want the sleepy shots, once you're into the three week plus window it is harder to get them to sleep in that deep sleep to pose them. Now this isn't to say it isn't possible and I have successfully photographed older newborn babies. However you are more likely to have a mix of awake and sleepy photos in your gallery.
when is the best time to book my newborn photoshoot?
The best time to book your newborn photoshoot is whilst you are still pregnant. I suggest after your 20 week scan is the best time. This ensures I have space in my diary for you and there is no last minute panicking trying to book in when you have had your baby. The window is very small to photograph your newborn so it is best to be organised and prepared in advance. You'll have enough to do when your baby arrives, so planning in advance makes things run more smoothly for you.
I can at times accommodate late bookings, please still get in touch with me for current availability.
what should i bring to my newborn photoshoot?
Leaving the house with a newborn baby in the early days is a mission in itself. So I try to make things as easy as possible for you.
I provide all of the outfits and wraps for your newborn baby. Beautiful handmade wraps and outfits are all available to use at the studio. All you need to bring is an outfit for yourself and for your children (if you are bringing older siblings). Neutral tones are best photographed together and ones that compliment each other. It is best to avoid loud bright colours or stripes.
If you are bottle feeding I always suggest to bring more milk than you think you will need, just incase we need extra feeds. And of course some nappies for your baby.
what if my baby DOESN'T sleep?
I completely understand this will be a worry for most parents before they come to a shoot. But fret not! The likelihood of your baby not sleeping at all is so so LOW! Newborn babies sleep a LOT! I always plan my newborn shoots in the morning as this is the best time for you baby. They have likely been awake a lot in the night feeding and will be tired and the most sleepy in the morning time.
I have many years of experience working with newborn babies and have many tricks up my sleeve to help them settle and sleep well for their shoot. I keep the studio nice and warm, I play white noise and I will rock them off to sleep if they are having trouble sleeping. On the rare occasion a baby isn't entirely sleepy we may capture a mix of awake and sleepy shots. And I have to say, the favourite images parents choose tend to be the ones where their baby has their eyes open!
